Cat Day

Apparently, today was World Cat Day. This is because the cat is the most popular pet. Apparently. It seems there’s around 2 cats per household in the US, which works out to 82 million. This is in contrast to 72 million dogs.

That’s all nice and cuddly…however. A report in January in the journal Nature Communications, states that cats in the US are responsible for the deaths of between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals annually. Even if you take the lowest of those estimates, it means that each cat is responsible for around 10 deaths a year. They have also been blamed for the worldwide extinction of 33 species.

Over here in the UK, most cat owners defend their pets by saying that they only kill a few birds each year rather than indulging in mass slaughter every night. That’s all well and good if there was only one cat in the UK. This is, of course, not the case. Last year there were approximately 8 million of them. That’s a lot of dead birds, voles, frogs and squirrels.

We prefer the joys of nature in our house…and the poodles who protect it. But enough stuff about cats…

The colour is now on the walls and we can finally call it the Old Rose Room. I’ll have to get a sign made.

Fortunately the day was bright and dry, just perfect for David to sand back, undercoat and paint the exterior of the Old Rose Room window.

It looked fabulous once he’d finished. Tomorrow he will complete it, along with the other gloss surfaces.

Mirinda was going to come home tonight and work from home tomorrow but thought better of it when I told her about the smell of gloss paint pervading the house and the crowded conditions in both the bedroom and her study where the contents of the Old Rose Room are presently stashed.
