Great Scott!

The Maltings have a series of concerts (one a month) called Girls & Guitars. The concert features a guitar playing girl (obviously) for a couple of hours, playing her own compositions to a small, intimate audience in the Riverside Café. Because they are on a Friday night, I thought Mirinda would enjoy going to them. So, last night, we went to see Hannah Scott.

She was excellent although her songs all appear quite angst ridden, as you’d expect from someone in her mid twenties. Although she assured us that several of her songs were upbeat by stressing those that weren’t, in truth it sounded like only two were. This isn’t a criticism, just an observation.

There were a few audience titters when she talked about her songs that addressed the problems of waking up beside someone after 20 years of marriage and realising you didn’t love them anymore. Clearly this wasn’t from experience but makes an interesting point about how youth views the older generation.

Over the two hours we found out she had spent nine months in Tuscany studying when she was 19. She just went, on her own, and wrote a song about it. I’m assuming she studied as well. She said how daunting it was at first, leaving home to discover life on her own. She ended up making some very close friends who, incidentally, she has just returned from visiting. Rather sadly, she had nothing but rain during her visit which, I guess, is the payback for the glorious weather we had over there.

Anyway, she has a Facebook page here and her music is available for download if you should want to listen to her. The BBC has a story on her here. She is a pretty amazing woman, if you ask me.

Hannah Scott performing at the Farnham Maltings

The venue is the same place where Dawn and I saw the fiddler last week. This could easily become a regular thing.

Thanks for the lovely blog post – glad you enjoyed the gig! Very amused by the ‘impressive little finger’ comment, Mirinda!! And I am very much working unfortunately, still in the day job though hoping to leave it as soon as I can… Thanks again, Hannah x
