Is Burt jazz?

I’m not a big fan of Burt Bacharach. I mean, I know most of his songs and can quite happily sing along with the best of them but he is a bit middle of the road for me. Not that I don’t think he is an amazing composer and song writer. He found the formula and very successfully used it to create 73 US and 52 UK hit songs.

And I’ve just discovered he’s had almost as many wives. And, contrary to what I thought, he’s not dead. Like Barbra Streisand isn’t dead.

The reason I’m talking about Burt is because tonight we went to a Canary Wharf jazz club called Boisdale to listen to Chris Dean and his orchestra play Bacharach.

We also had a delicious meal with Amanda and Carlos… eventually. Poor Amanda always gets lost and confused when she travels to Canary Wharf and tonight was no exception. Still, she eventually found us.

I’d come fresh from the mud that is presently the Garden of One Thousand Yaps. The rain of the last couple of days has been quite heavy and drenched everything. It had stopped enough for me to plant up some foxglove and ferns, place a couple more stepping stones and prepare for the arrival of the trellis.

Then the trellis arrived. It was due to arrive between 12 and 4 so, naturally, it arrived just before 4.

Anyway, I had it up in no time then I planted the climber for it – a jasmine.

Then, of course, I had to get ready to leave for town.

After meeting Mirinda and Carlos and waiting for Amanda, we headed over to the Big Easy for our usual rum cocktail only to find that they don’t do that anymore. How irritating is that? We hadn’t even tried all of the ones on the menu yet. Even so, we had normal cocktails…except for Amanda who had a peanut butter milkshake.

Dinner, music and company was excellent but I soon had to leave in order to (just) catch the 23:23 train home. It was a somewhat frantic trip to Waterloo.

We loved Boisdale. We’ll be back.
