More time in the garden

We had tried and tried to get climbers to grow up our pergola, without a lot of success but this year, things are looking a little brighter. The black eyed Susans are being very prolific on one leg and, a huge surprise, our fuchsia which, for all intents and purposes, was dead, has sprung forth with a small collection of gorgeous flowers.

I particularly like fuchsias so this is a great source of joy for me. The new buds, adorned with the tiniest of raindrops, look very pretty as the brief moments of sunshine make them sparkle.

Speaking of the garden, today I trimmed the hedge. Well, after the rain stopped and the sun made an appearance. It’s the job I hate. Still, has to be done, and all that so I gathered together my various implements of destruction, set my ladder and trimmed away.

The worst part is clearing up afterwards. Raking, picking up, throwing onto the stick pile; repeat; repeat; REPEAT! Takes almost as long as the job itself. Anyway, ’tis done now and my aches will wait till tomorrow.

While I was working away, the poodles helped by lying on the grass watching, with the occasional bark whenever an owner yelled for a naughty dog in the park. Carmen had a chewy stick treat I’d given her and was happily gnawing away at it except when Day-z came within 20 feet when Carmen would growl menacingly. It’s very unusual for Carmen to get so territorial with regards food (or treats or toys or…well most things really) and it had Day-z acting very warily.

Bored with having to continually tell Carmen to shut up, I gave Day-z another treat (she’d already finished the one I gave her earlier) thinking they would both settle down and munch in peace. How wrong I was.

Day-z generally takes everything she wants and builds a little pile. This never annoys Carmen because she just doesn’t care but it shows a very selfish streak in Day-z which we can’t seem to rid her of. It was therefore quite funny to see Carmen sneak up when Day-z wasn’t looking, and steal her chewy treat and take it back to her own. The look on Day-z’s face was wonderful!

Eventually Carmen tired of the treats and sat and watched me from the slatted bench. It didn’t take Day-z long to take advantage of this. She quickly collected both chews and hid them…somewhere. If she was a Cheshire dog, she’d be grinning.

This weeks episode of Spooks featured a rather long sequence at the mythical Central University. And it was all filmed at MY university! Hilarious. All the internal shots were in the corridors I know so well. Genius.
