Splitting corms

Today I spent a lot of time in the hot border, finishing a job that Mirinda started on the weekend.

The crocosmia didn’t grow very well this year. Actually, it grew okay but then all fell over and became a sort of bush of long thin stems with occasional flowers popping out. Mirinda figured they were probably too crowded and decided some thinning out was required.

And so, armed with fork and kneeling pad, she started digging them up. Attached to the bottom of each corm (they are NOT called bulbs) were collections of new corms either above or below the roots. Very weird. Mirinda suggested we should separate them and create more plants.

Well, today I finished digging them up, getting rid of dirt, splitting them up and putting them in storage pots. I then turned the dirt, cleaning up and ridding it of any invasive weed roots before spreading some compost and turning it in.

I should mention the weather. It was bloody hot. Completely wrong for this time of year. I didn’t take my hat off for the entire day.

After lunch, I started planting the corms back into the border, finishing some time late in the day. I stood back and looked at my work and I was pleased. Looking at the storage pots, I realised I had an awful lot more left over.

I’ll be preparing another bed for the leftovers.
