Short back and sides, please

Sandra, my physiotherapist, told me that I would have a wonky wrist for 12 months since the break. It’s been a bit ache-y at times but nothing exceptional. If you ignore the strange colours it turns sometimes. Anyway, after today, I believe her. For today I really tested it out.

Yesterday Mirinda declared I should go manic on the hedge (to be fair she’s done this before but I’ve normally shied away from reducing it to the requisite six foot) come hell or highwater. Today I started. Most of today I thrashed, cut and hacked the thing to within an inch of its life. In some cases, half an inch.

I was further ordered NOT to use a ladder, so most of the higher stuff was cleared from the four legged security of a garden chair.

To say my wrist ached afterwards would be an understatement. I’m dreading tomorrow morning when I’ll probably not be able to hold the phone and my coffee at the same time, again.

While I spent the bulk of the day making like a jungle clearance engineer in deepest darkest Africa, I did find time to take the poodles for a lovely walk around the park. We visited three of the ponds, looking for birds or any other unusual wildlife (‘wildlife’! Always makes me laugh…like a newt would somehow kill you within 30 seconds or a blue tit could peck your skull in).

We didn’t manage to find anything except wonderful serenity and birdsong which even the poodles appreciated. Here is one example of the serenity we witnessed.

Still pond, still life

On this months notices posted around the park, is a small note saying we may see red kites floating above us. I’ve never been lucky enough to see one when I have a camera with me. Actually, I’ve only ever seen them when we’re driving in the country and then only fleetingly. So it was with great excitement that I saw two birds of prey circling above the Queen’s Bottom on our way home.

Looking for lunch

I spent ages taking photos of them. They were very high so, even with my telephoto lens, they are still quite small. However, with a bit of photoshop trickery, I found out they were, in fact, not red kites but buzzards. Not quite so exciting but even so! I’m well pleased. Here’s as close as I can squeeze one of them.

Magnificent bird in a magical sky

And, yes, it was a magnificent day today. Well, after the fog had burnt off. It was actually very hot trimming the hedge. In fact, I seriously worked up quite a sweat.

By the way, yesterday’s post now has the honour of receiving the most hits of any post so far – 215! That’s a lot of James Bond fanatics.
