Trosa (which, strangely translates as ‘panty’) was declared a city on 19 April 1610 by King Karl IX. According to a small plaque on the wall of the town hall, and decoded by Google Translate, ‘Old panties came up everywhere already during the end of the 14th century’ which makes no sense at all. It makes me wonder what they were doing with their underwear back then.
The town hall was originally built in 1711 but then, during the Great Pillage of 1719, the Russians burned it down. However, undaunted, they built a second town hall in 1725. This one was torn down in 1883 with the tower being kept somewhere safe. The building now standing was built in 1985. It’s a replica of the 1725 version. The tower was placed on top.
Notably, while the town was burned to the ground, the church in Trosa was also spared by the Russians in 1719. I thought this was to do with their religious concerns however, according to the local histories, they stabled their horses there.
Then, moving ahead a little, on 4 May 2023, Mirinda signed a contract for the purchase of the Red House. A lot of people know the date as Star Wars Day while we remember it for being our wedding anniversary. Now, of course, it will also be known as Contract Day.
Mirinda spent a lot of the day talking to experts. There was Larissa the translator and Michael the engineer. Larissa explained the contract while Michael went through his issue report for the house. Both documents were in Swedish, obviously.
And then, finally, from 5pm, she sat with Klas and Joachim (the current owner of the Red House) and went through the Contract, line by line, before signing it.
Now, the final hoop to jump through is the bank account. This should happen next Monday and then we can make some firm plans.
And to think that prior to June 6, 2021, we had never been to Trosa. In fact, I’d never heard of it. And now, we are almost certainly going to live here.
As for our anniversary, we were originally planning a celebratory dinner at Bomans, but the contract signing took up most of the evening, so we decided to postpone that until tomorrow. Instead, I made a frittata which Mirinda said was the best I’ve ever made.
