Tropical storm in Farnham

I made some sauerkraut today. Last week I bought some rather nice stuff which, sadly, was in a plastic container. I wrote to the company, saying how much I enjoyed the product but wouldn’t be buying it again because of the packaging. I suggested glass. I had a response with a list of reasons why plastic is better than glass.

I was a bit baffled by their claims, so I checked out a reliable plastic v glass website. The list was, basically, correct, but it was more about what had been left off. The fact that plastic is always leaching harmful things into the environment being probably the biggest issue. Glass is the perfect receptacle.

So, as I say, I made my own and filled a glass jar with it.

The black spots are peppercorns and the bits of green are rosemary from the garden. There’s also slices of fresh garlic in there. It’ll be ready in about a week.

While I worked away in the kitchen, the weather kept changing its mind.

It appears that we are having a typical British summer. Since our return, there’s been a lot of rain and the temperature has struggled to reach 20°. We bought a new cushion for the sun lounger because the old one had rotted away, but we’ve not had the chance to use it. It’s currently draped over the handlebars of the exercise bike, looking longingly at the drizzle outside.

The Met bureau has been threatening us with an August heatwave in what can only be described as wishful thinking.

At least today started off nice and sunny, after a wet night. My walk into town was sunlit and pleasant. Mirinda also walked into town, though later than me. She had to renew her driving licence at the post office.

The back of the letter telling her that it was due to expire said all she needed to do was turn up at the post office, have her photo taken and pay. I assured her of this. Then the person at the counter told her she had to fill in a form because the licence had expired in May.

Mirinda hates filling in forms. It is, therefore, part of the home management job description that I fill in the forms. Of course, I wasn’t there. And poor Mirinda had the wrong glasses with her.

You’d think it would be a reasonable request to ask someone at a counter if they could check you’d filled in a form properly. This is not the case at the post office. “We’re not allowed to,” was the jobsworth’s reply. I think it’s very sad that it’s considered wrong to help another human being.

Anyway, the form was sent off and, hopefully, a new driving licence will arrive in the mail soon.

Back at home, the weather drifted back and forth betwixt wet and dry until, in the mid-afternoon, we had a sudden thunderstorm with drenching rain and flashing cracks of lightning. I was in my office and had to rush to shut the door.

As I sat, safe and dry from the onslaught outside, I had a text message from Mirinda asking if I was okay. I replied that it felt like I was in Queensland.

The storm was very sudden. I feel sorry for anyone out, walking the dog when it struck.
