Christmas Bath

The Christmas market was on in Farnham today. We’d probably have gone had we been home. But we were in Bath, visiting Sophie and Tom and touring Bath’s Christmas market instead.

And what an amazing market it is. And popular…very, very popular.

Before the market, we had a lovely Italian lunch made by Sophie (it was delicious) followed by a walk up to the Botanical Garden (stopping off on Pulteney Street to see the 8th Wonder of the World which was a rather sad display of Christmas Trees in a church that Mirinda insisted we enjoy) where Tom made friends with a number of sticks. He has a thing for sticks. Actually the first one was actually more of a branch than a stick. Fortunately he found a russ tree he thought would take great care of his branchy friend.

“But how does the tree grow like that?” Also, I know this is NOT a russ!

He then found a stick which resembled a bow. He was amazed that someone would just throw it away. I told him how trees work and how bits of them fall off onto the ground, particularly in Botanical Gardens. I’m not sure he understood but he hung onto the stick (Eric) for the rest of our walk.

We decided to stop for a coffee before hitting the market properly and, unfortunately headed for a ridiculously crowded Starbucks. It was my fault entirely. I should have agreed with Sophie and settled for Nero. Starbucks, I hate to say, was not pleasant though some moods did improve after Tom decided to pour his hot chocolate all over himself and the fabric chair he was sitting on. Sophie wasn’t best pleased but the rest of us did laugh a bit.

We were lucky that the carol singing started just as we arrived at the front of the Abbey. Not so keen was a young chap who walked passed me muttering about leaving before the “…bloody carol singing starts…” to his heavily made up partner.

Ding dong merrily

Wandering around the market we stopped here and there to buy things (ornaments for Mirinda, cards for Sophie, small festive scenes for Tom, Bratwurst for me) and tried not to lose anyone. We had a jolly fun time.

Sadly, lovely days must come to an end (Tom wanted me to stay and send Mirinda home on her own) so, eventually, we bid them adieu and headed off in Max for the almost two hour drive home. The puppies were very happy to see us.

Oh, and on the way home, Mirinda accused me of defending Starbucks when I blamed the customers for the awful time we had there. I make no apologies.
