Birthday food

What a horrid day! The rain drizzled down virtually non-stop. We stayed inside.

This was an excellent decision for two reasons. Obviously because of the rain but also because Mirinda seems to have picked up a cold from somewhere. She snuffled most of the day away on a lounge. I snoozed on the other one.

Mirinda’s cold didn’t stop us going out for our much anticipated dinner at Brasserie Blanc, the newest restaurant in Farnham. This was good because it was her birthday dinner.

What a marvellous job they’ve done with the building! This was the building that Bev worked on back in November, 2011. Back then, the front part was just a big empty space but the back was full of grotty little rooms. One of them was set up as a staff kitchen and the other a little sewing workroom, serving the dress shop that was there.

Now it looks a completely different place and just goes to show how an old (possibly architecturally important) Georgian building can be changed from an unused space to a glorious place to eat.

From the front, it looks good but not particularly special. Then you are shown to your table. The depths of the restaurant are beautifully decorated with lots of room to eat. There even appears to be an outside area for when the weather improves.

We had a drink first, giving us time to peruse the menu. Mirinda was somewhat dismayed that they didn’t make cocktails (though this is something that may happen one day, according to the guy behind the bar) but happily settled for a champagne.

And dinner was lovely. I had the steak tartare which featured a perfectly shaped raw egg yolk, the most delicious chicken leg I think I’ve ever tasted and we both had the bombe Alaska for dessert.

The only down side (and it didn’t really bother us) was a lady who collapsed while making her way to a table. The staff were excellent and an ambulance arrived and took her away. Obviously I feel sorry for her, collapsing like that and clearly not being very well however, I also feel sorry for her missing out on a lovely meal in a gorgeous restaurant.
