A snowman for Jesus

I found another Winter scene window today. The artist produced a couple of snowmen on the windows of Colours, the shop at the top of the Lion and Lamb Yard. I ran into Andrew in Starbucks, and he told me how he and his friend Michael watched the guy climb into the window and, armed with spray can and a small scraping tool, create this.

I particularly like the shadow thrown by the carrot.

The Winter scenes remind me of Christmas day last year in Sweden. And the snowy January. Mind you, I don’t remember seeing any snowmen. Which is odd because, apparently, they are quite universal. The first drawn one was Jewish and is in a Book of Hours from 1380. Unlikely as it seems, it was melting by a fire next to a passage about the crucifixion.

The link above describes quite a few snowmen through the ages, including a beautiful one that Michelangelo made in 1490 for the Medicis.

There wasn’t any snowmen around Farnham today. Had there been, they’d have melted. The weather was quite mild. Autumn has begun the inexorable lurch towards bare trees, with the all weather path littered with brown leaves. But snow? Not even close.
