Running hot and cold

On the outside of my garden office in Farnham, I screwed a thermometer to the outside wall. I found it a lot better for telling me the temperature than looking at an app on my phone. Or watching the weather on the telly. I’m always wondering where the temperature is measured, for one thing. For another, it’s easier looking at something that’s right in front of you rather than getting your phone out of your pocket, activating the screen, unlocking it, finding the right app, starting it up and then locating the weather forecast for wherever you are.

I’ve missed the thermometer outside my garden office, so I ordered one to go on the outside of the Glass Room, and it arrived today.

And, yes, it was 5°. Actually, it took me a moment to realise that the gradient markings on the left (1, 2, 3, etc) are only half of the number. The markings on the right (0, 0, 0, etc) are the other half. Hopefully the numbers at the top and bottom are merely to make the thing big enough to read.

But that wasn’t the only thing to do with temperature today. It also marked the first time Mirinda has lit the fire in our new house.

She (with Fi, Lauren and Jason) bought a big bag of wood from ICA the other day. They don’t sell kindling, however, so I had to chop up a couple of logs to create some. Unfortunately, we didn’t have an axe, so I bought one this morning.

It has a sexy composite head and is very easy to grip. Of course, I’d rather have a wooden one with an iron head but, I thought this one looked pretty sexy. Incidentally, the printed paper at the top of the photo was instructions for a pair of gloves I bought for handling the wood. I was surprised that a pair of gloves required instructions, but there you go.

And, due to the cold we are now experiencing, I decided to make hotpot for dinner. It’s one of my favourite meals and was enjoyed in a perfectly comfy, warming way.

But, back at the fireside…Mirinda made an excellent fire and subsequently dragged her rocking chair in from the Glass Room in order to get the maximum benefit from it.

I think the second chair was intended for me, but I could never sit that close. I’d melt. Besides, the warmth spread quickly throughout the doughnut. I sat on a recliner instead, covered in puppies. They always keep me warm.
