Blog despair

The blog has just returned from an extended holiday in some sort of limbo. I have been trying to expedite its return since 9 July. Anyone bored with technical stuff can stop reading about here.

First it was the DNS server names that needed changing because the host was moving to a new set of servers. All good and easy (you’d think) except not quite so when it comes to the register who owns mine. They have to be prodded…a lot. Still, eventually they managed to do it.

While I waited the inevitable delay, the host moved everything. They thoughtfully sent me a link so I could login and check everything. I almost fainted when I realised there was nothing there for the usinuk and chawtonbookgroup websites. Empty they were. You could have sent a noise in there and it would have echoed for centuries.

Fortunately my host just delights in fixing my problems via a live chat facility and one of their expert helper elves sorted it out in a matter of minutes. That was a relief. I have backups of the blog databases but that doesn’t include images, videos or other inclusions…just text. And there’s around 1900 blog posts on there. I would not have been happy had I lost it all.

But they all returned (plus other content that’s been gathering dust for years) and just sat and waited for the DNS changes to take effect. Which they did, yesterday. So, this morning I tried to get in to my blog only to be told that there was nothing there.

I immediately went onto Live Chat to talk to a techie and the blog soon appeared (about an hour). I was very pleased and thanked the techie profusely. I then went into the blog to find that it was a version from 25 June and was missing almost all of the Dordogne trip. So, back onto Live Chat for another hour while another techie (it’s never the same person) fixed that up for me. Then, finally, all was well and I could update the entries since last week. Which explains why there’s entries preceding this.

That’s enough technical stuff (it is, after all, for me really). The rest of the day was spent in the frightful Bishops Waltham ordering Mirinda a fridge and having to prove she was who I said she was, having lunch and taking Day-z for a hot walk round the dull nature reserve.
