It seems that summer has well and truly gone for this year. It was very sudden. One day hot and sunny, then, as if some mischievous Met Bureau pixie had decided to make a point about an early Autumn, the mercury plummeted and the clear skies were replaced by murky cloud and drizzly rain.
This morning we were going to take the poodles for an early romp across Thursley Common. We sat in the lounge and watched a big, black, evil cloud approach from the south. And then it fell. Huge globs of rain, drenching everything beneath them. We decided not to go for a bit.
I Skyped mum instead, listening to the rain clattering on the roof of the office.
And then, as suddenly as it had appeared, the rain blew away. We decided we should head out asap and take advantage of the sun.
Thursley looked glorious. The trackway has been extended (with work still underway) making it even more accessible. It really is a lovely landscape, flat and dotted with trees and pools of ecological delight.
There were a few, isolated groups of people wandering around the boards but once we hit the woods that border the bogland, we felt like we had the place to ourselves.
Mirinda found this new walk ages ago but my wonky knee meant I couldn’t experience it so today she showed me. She said that the woods are very welcome when the summer sun is beating down over the open area of the common. Today, it didn’t make a lot of difference.
As we emerged from the woodland, the vista before us stretched away for miles, the clouds looking big, white and fluffy. It all looked glorious, causing us to stop regularly and just gaze in appreciation. It was a thoroughly enjoyable walk. Even with a sudden burst of rain on the way back to the car.
And the best part of it, was that Carmen decided she didn’t want to go bog snorkelling this week.
The rest of the day was spent in laze mode (Mirinda even indulging in a granny nap) until around 9pm when I left for the flat.
I’m off to the Globe with the Weasels tomorrow and it seems that South West Trains realise it. They have decided to completely destroy the train timetable by having engineering work all day Sunday. It seemed a very good idea to stay at the flat and not have to get up at stupid o’clock.
I had a very uneventful trip into town and arrived at the flat at 11pm.
A lovely day, indeed.
I like the phrase “pools of ecological delight”. It is hard to choose my favourite walk now as Thursley – the big walk – is now a serious contender against Hankley and Frensham.
They all sound lovely, I think the train people just like to play with TRAINS.
