Ready for the Deckening

The sofa finally arrived today. The one for the deck. So, after a number of false starts, we can now organise the Deckening. To clarify, a Deckening is like a Christening but rather than a baby, it’s all about the deck.*

When Harald and Roger finished the deck, and it was so brilliant, we decided we’d organise an open house. An invitation for everyone we know to come and see our marvellous addition. It seemed a very Swedish thing to do. The trouble was, we needed some furniture on it first.

You’d think this would be an easy thing, wouldn’t you? But you’d be thinking wrong. Okay, we managed to order and get the table and chairs but the sofa was not so easy. Still, after a few false starts involving not in stock issues and wrong phone numbers, our new deck sofa arrived today.

Of course, the delivery wasn’t without its difficulties. I was told it would turn up between 12 and 16:00 and that the driver would call me 30 minutes beforehand. I figured I was safe to go shopping and headed off early. I returned to the house and, about ten minutes later, a big truck pulled up outside the house.

It was well before midday.

Anyway, the guy unloaded a massive box and Jason and I unpacked and set up the sofa. There was a bit of confusion because it was only the one box but, as we opened it, we realised the packing was so good, one box was all that was required.

In order to make sure the sofa would pass muster, I tested it out during Reading Hour. Muster was definitely passed.

We shall now organise a proper Deckening.

Now, what shall I make with red currants?

* The Open House was also going to be a Meet the Nephew occasion but, it’s been so long that everyone has already met him. And, to be fair, quite a few people have already seen and even eaten on the deck but I’m counting those as test runs.
