Churros and a big glass of sherry

We were going to see The Jungle Book in Newbury tonight. Rowena was in it, and we were very much looking forward to seeing her. Last week, Lisa and Rupert went and thoroughly enjoyed it. Then came the new mask rules yesterday. Neither of us wanted to sit in a theatre wearing a mask. Needless to say, we decided not to go.

Instead, we booked for linner at Pulpo Negro in Alresford.

Given we’d intended to be away for most of the day, we’d organised for the girls to visit with Sue, something they were both looking forward to. We figured they may as well still go. In the meanwhilst, we pottered around the house up until it was time to go to linner.

After a dry day, the rain chased us all the way there.

Not that we got wet at all. By the time we parked, the rain was reduced to a drizzle for the short walk across the road.

As usual, Pulpo Negro delivered in spades. Always friendly and welcoming; always delicious and inventive. Easily a favourite restaurant. And we’re not alone. The place is always packed. Popular it definitely is.

Of course, among our dishes, we had the gambas (with extra bread to mop up the oil).

Other dishes included charred bread, olives, croquetas, crispy artichokes, BBQ sand carrots and ox cheek empanada. It was all, as usual, fantastic.

The thing with Pulpo Negro is how much it feels like Spain. We’ve been to many Spanish tapas places all over the country and the whole atmosphere is captured here. Okay, they’re not Spanish, but otherwise we could have been eating in Córdoba or Seville. And that’s something I love.

And the staff always make us feel like we’re old friends.

I decided to finish with churros and a glass of Pedro Ximénez. The perfect end to a meal. Mind you, Mirinda may disagree as she had the baked cheesecake.

The only problem with going to Pulpo Negro is how much I want to go back. Hopefully it won’t be too long before we do.
