El oh el ay

We had just about everything in weather terms today. When I walked to the shops it was in falling snow. This turned into a horrid session of sleet. There was blue skies and sunshine that changed quickly to grey skies. The afternoon brought rain. Then, to top it all off, at about 5pm we had a very noisy hail storm, clattering on the roof lantern and forcing me to turn the radio up. Fortunately, the time we chose to go to the park the weather was kind.

Today, in the park, Day-z was in a wandering mood. She hasn’t done this for ages but today she felt she had to go trotting off into every copse we walked passed. Of course, Emma has to follow her but she’ll never go too far and always races back to me when they get more than about 20 feet.

If that wasn’t enough, Emma decided to play her Running in Circles game. This involves her barking at Day-z then, once she reacts, running at great speed in big diameter circles around me.

Day-z, being the wise old poodle she is, tends to cross the circle to send Emma barrelling over. This is partly strategic but also because she can’t run as fast if she just follows her. Emma loves the fact that Day-z can’t catch her without cheating. Then we met Lola.

Lola is a 10 month old gun dog with all the speed of a cheetah, long legs to match and a desperate need for speed. Her owner was blowing blasts on a dog whistle, trying to get her to return but Lola was having none of it. Every time she blew a blast of sound I couldn’t hear, Emma would look up trying to locate the source. Lola, naturally, took no notice at all.

When Lola met Emma, the chase was on. Emma didn’t stand a chance as Lola played the Running in Circles game so fast, she was threatening to meet herself.

This impromptu game had me standing in the middle with Lola well out in front, a manic Emma trying to catch her and Day-z impotently giving little barks of frustration and vague attempts at catching them as they came by. It was quite funny and nicely exhausting for Emma. Sadly for Lola’s owner, I don’t think she can wear out. Our last sight of her was running over the hill with her owner alternately frantically yelling and blowing on her whistle.

Of course all of this running on slushy ground made Emma filthy so she was dumped unceremoniously into the laundry sink upon our return. She didn’t like that very much.
