This lovely garden has regular open days with the NGS. It's all squeezed into 2 acres but seems far bigger by the expert way it is laid out. As you enter from the front garden you have the option of buying the excellent (though oddly written) guide of the house and garden. Walking around the first building, the rose garden hoves into view. In the centre is an old sundial, rescued from Pitshill - a lot of the marks have worn off so it was difficult to tell how it keeps time. There's a lovely walk around the house leading up to the Grass Walks where a very old oak marks the turn towards the Nut Walk. This is a 100 year old narrow avenue of nut trees. A small group of very ugly pot bellied pigs point the visitor towards the back gate back into the main house garden.
The house (unfortunately not opened to visitors) is a bit
of a marvelous mish-mash of styles from around the 1600s to the present day.
The
Mitford's have lived there since 1760.
Our hour or so spent wandering the grounds were very pleasant and highly recommended. If you'd like to know when it's open next, click the NGS link below.
