And so we headed back to NSW this morning. We were going to stop off at Natural Bridge and admire the wonderful waterfall and eroded rock formations but, being a lovely December Saturday, it was packed with cars. We also had a car full of stuff and the big ‘Thieves operate in this area’ signs everywhere were a bit off-putting. We decided to leave it for another time – possibly a weekday.
The trip to Mullumbimby was very pleasant, going through mountains and valleys and so much green it reminded us of England in a weird sort of way.
We drove through Moobal, an amazing place that seems more than a little obsessed with cows. Even the telegraph poles have the lower third of them painted like Fresians.
The Mullumbimby Motel was fully booked when we arrived. The big, blazing NO VACANCY sign made no bones about the room situation. Mirinda reckons we probably booked the last room…which is odd because it’s actually the first room after Reception.
The motel seems fine – there’s no stairs and the car is directly outside the room, there’s a queen size bed, a big fan and air conditioning if required. The Internet access isn’t free so my postings won’t be as long as usual.
The TV took a bit of working out (the instructions could be a little more…well, instructive) but has plenty for Mirinda to watch while I tap away on my keyboard. The best thing is the location.
Mullumbimby high street is just up the road – I really could throw a stone that far…almost. Ideal for walking to lunch or dinner, which we did a little while after arriving. Breakfast had been rather late. We pulled into the wonderfully laid back Nimbin Valley café and enjoyed a seat on the verandah, not long after leaving Burleigh Heads.
Cafe in the mountains
Because of the late breakfast, we were seated in La Table in Mullumbimby at 4pm, waiting for a delicious lunch of assorted cheeses, tapenade (not as good as mine but still very good) and home made baguette. We then thought it best to book for dinner, seeing as they were about the only place open.
It took a while to get served but it was worth the wait. The chef is French and the whole ‘take your time’ French style is something we’re quite used to. No rush, no stress. Works for me.
And dinner was utterly superb. The best meal we’ve had for a very long time. And reasonably priced as well. It gets a 10/10 from us. Genius.
It was so good, we are now booked in for dinner on New Years Eve.
