Soaked and soaked again

It rained almost constantly in West Sussex today, particularly round the Eartham area. I know this because I was in it. All of it. There was little respite. Consequently I spent the day being quite wet.

It was our second day of Digging with George and, seriously, it wasn’t pleasant. For instance, this was our trench.

muddy

Wet clay and flint

We found the other enclosure edge but didn’t get to the bottom. George told us that it had been found in one of the other trenches so we could finish up for lunch and then we’d plan the site.

So we sat beneath the trees and ate our sandwiches, my bottom getting wetter from the rain soaked chair I was sitting on. We had a jolly, joking time, mainly agreeing we were all pretty daft.

After lunch we, as a group, measured and plotted all three trenches, placing them into the landscape so they could be added onto an OS map for future reference. Needless to say, it still rained. And there was even more mud everywhere.

Once we’d finished and all the equipment had been packed into a wet and tidy pile, George took us on a tour of the top field. It was worth spending the two days there just to see the view from there. Even on a day of low cloud and rain, it all looked magnificent. George pointed out to us all the sites under consideration for exploration. There could be a lot of digging in these here hills.

It was then a slushy, squelchy trip back home (the bus driver gave me a filthy look but let me on anyway) and one of the best showers I think I’ve ever had.

Mmm, I think it might rain…again

Has today put me off archaeology? Not bloody likely!
