Democratic process

As I said to Mirinda today, Sweden is the third country in which we have voted. And, along with the staff being very helpful to a pair of clueless foreigners, it was incredibly simple. Pick a party, take a coloured piece of paper, seal it in an envelope and hand it to an electoral official, go home. Of course, there is the more complicated route where you can select actual candidates but, for the politically illiterate, the blank piece of paper is super easy.

There is also the route here in Sweden whereby you can vote before election day. And, apparently, you can change that vote up until election day, if a party, other than the one you have chosen, says something you fancy more.

The only thing I regret about exercising my democratic right is not being able to watch the political debate on the TV. Okay, we listen to The Local podcast, Sweden in Focus, which has given us a lot of information as well as news regarding issues and promises but I do rather enjoy political debates. It’s always a good chance to yell at the telly.

And, of course, the election night broadcast. That is always ‘fun’.

Rather than listening and watching political analysts battle and bitch over the exit polls, after a delicious Persian roast chicken dinner, we watched Kenneth Branagh’s version of Death on the Nile.

The film was all a bit lush with far too much CGI that looked cartoonish a lot of the time. It turns out that the whole thing was filmed in England.

The film almost stuck to the original plot, though with a few character changes, which was nice though it did mean that I knew what was going to happen, having played the detective, Canon Pennefather, in the Murder on the Nile, stage version many, many years ago.

It was all very polished but there was something missing and I really would not have included the final scene.

Apparently, Christie wrote the play first and made the Canon the detective because she was bored with Poirot. Then, sometime later, she turned it into a book.

Anyway, it was an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday night. Particularly after voting.

As you can see by the photo above, the day was not particularly boat worthy.
