Votes, boats and baked veg

As the election rapidly approaches (we all vote tomorrow) the political parties in Trosa were out in force, in front of the automatic doors into the ICA today. We had to pop in for essential picnic food for a boat trip that never happened and I immediately spotted Bengt, leaning against an advertising board, ready to convince people to vote for his particular party. I made straight for him, shook his hand and returned his big grin. It was a very effective way not to be bothered by any of the other campaigners.

As I returned, through the doors, I noticed that the board he was leaning against was advertising a reduced price on smör. My brain, in that habit it has of quickly turning most things into a joke, formulated a response but then, common sense kicked in and I just said good luck.

What I could have said

“Buttering up the electorate, eh?“

What I did say

“Good luck for tomorrow.“

It was a moment that reminded me of the elderly English chap who walked by us in France many years ago. He had a walking stick and, as he passed me, he said “Sticks that pass, eh,” to which his son said “I don’t think the French will understand that, Dad.“

I replied with something like “But an Australian would!” It would have been such a shame if he hadn’t said it. Hopefully I will not regret my reticence today.

As I said above, we were going boating but, for two reasons, we decided against it and, instead, had a picnic inside rather than on an island out in the archipelago.

Reason one was the fact that Freya was not good today. Okay, at a pinch she would just curl up on a blanket in the bottom of the boat and sleep, but she wasn’t really able to stand very well today so just getting on the boat would have been a bit beyond her. We decided to spare her the indignity of wobbling along the dock.

Reason two was probably the big decider. The weather was a bit unpredictable. Steely grey sky with the threat of rain. As it turned out, the rain didn’t put in an appearance until about 18:30, but it certainly looked capable for most of the day.

So we mainly stayed in, though Mirinda took Emma for a lovely walk in the afternoon while I snuggled with Freya during reading hour. And then, of course, I cooked dinner.

A while ago, I was going to cook a meal for a dinner party and wanted to try something new by Geraldine but, for reasons I’ve forgotten, the meal never went ahead. I have still been wanting to try the recipe so I decided to give it a shot tonight.

And it turned out delicious. Endives wrapped in ham and baked in a béchamel sauce.

It was a big hit.
