I used to joke that the reason I was rarely bothered by mosquitoes was because of the amount of alcohol in my blood. Now I realise it was not a joke after all. Heading through the woods the other day, I was inundated by swarms of buzzing insects. It was so bad that today I smothered myself in repellent to keep the bastards at bay. I’m glad to say, it worked.
I feel very sorry for people who have had to put up with the mozzies all their life.
Three things, apart from the mosquito issue, happened today that are worth writing about. Soup, weather and Freya.
The weather, which started hot and sunny turned very wet late on. We were sitting watching the TV after dinner and I had a weather report pop up on my phone. It claimed it would rain soon. I looked out the window at the blue sky and sunshine and scoffed. The weather reports are not usually reliable. A short while later, the clouds had secretly gathered and the world outside was suddenly drenched.
This would not have been an issue except for the fact that I’d left the cushions out on the deck sofa following a gloriously sunny Reading Hour. They then spent the night in the vestibule, drying out.
Freya, on the other hand, continues to improve. Today I took her for a very short walk towards the ski slope. On our way back she suddenly spotted a couple of pigeons wandering on the path ahead of us. She crouched and went into full hunting mode. She then leapt forwards, heading for the birds.
Obviously, the birds were never in any danger. Freya is still not fast enough to do anything even remotely threatening. The pigeons flew off. Better than the preservation of birdlife, this is the first time that Freya has shown an interest in anything since she first became sick. It was a very good doggy day.
Then there was the soup.
Given the long hot days we’ve been experiencing, I decided to make Mirinda a cold soup for lunch. I usually make gazpacho when chilled soup is required but, today, I decided to make Geraldine’s chilled zucchini and pea soup.
Not only did it taste fantastic, I think I managed the presentation pretty near perfectly.

I sent the image to Anna (from the retreat) and she thought my photography was also improving. Score maximum points for Gary.
