Do not forget the simnel

The next performance we are supposedly hosting is coming next week. It has been organised by the kommun. We were told they would be doing everything, and we could just sit back, relax and enjoy the show. It turns out that they are, in fact, doing nothing except for putting their name on the poster. I know because we did the usual drive around with the staple gun today, pinning them up. Given the show is next week, I’m not sure what they are going to achieve.

Hopefully, Kullervo won’t suffer the same fate as The Lovebirds. I’m quite looking forward to it. Kullervo is a Finnish myth and the show will use movement, song, and text; it sounds a bit like Shared Experience, a group we have long loved and admired.

Mind you, I think the poster looks like it’s advertising a new gym. Actually a chap came up to me while I was putting one up in the centrum and jokingly asked if the photo was of me. Cheek!

Still, fingers crossed, we get to see it next week.

The rest of my day was, basically, spent in the kitchen – lunch, dinner, cake, etc. Tomorrow is someone’s special day and the only way to celebrate it is with a simnel cake, simnel cake being her favourite. Or, rather, one of her favourites.

I’ve been making them each year since 2011 though they were originally for Easter. Then Mirinda claimed them for her very own. Personally, I love the story of how they came about. It’s in this post, if anyone is interested.

Mum and Dad particularly liked them. I would make one (or two) for them whenever I visited Queensland. They didn’t last very long. The cakes, I mean.

Anyway, here is this year’s effort. Or, as I call it, Simnel 2026.

It smells and looks pretty close to perfect. Let’s hope it tastes good as well.
