The biggest excitement of today was my first attempt to wear shoes in a week. The last time was the mammoth effort to walk to the ICA. To be honest, it feels more like a month being stuck in the house. But, today, I was determined. My goal was to empty the letterbox.
After lunch, I sat outside in the glassroom and attached the braces that help me walk and stood up. The dogs stared at me, wondering what I was doing. I told them to run around the front garden. Emma did just that. She then returned, looking for a tennis ball. I told her there was no way I was throwing a tennis ball into the snow as she’d never find it. She seemed to understand.
I then, very slowly and carefully, gripping my cane, walked to the letterbox. Then I walked back. A success.

After this great success, tomorrow I aim to take the girls for a walk.
Apart from the disappointment that there was only one redirected letter from the UK and the local OSP in the letterbox, I listened to a fair bit of radio today while I worked on admin (scanning and shredding, etc). One item on the World Service that caught my ears was a piece on the movie adaptation of H is for Hawk.
After my father died, Dawn bought me the book by Helen Macdonald, hoping it would help me grieve. It certainly helped the author. And me. In fact, the book is wonderful. Grief is a deeply personal thing; we all process death in different ways. Macdonald’s choice to train a goshawk as her way to cope with the death of her father worked well for her. Reading about it, did the same for me.
Claire Foy, an actor I very much admire (whenever I think of a young QEII, I always picture her and I loved seeing her live in Lungs), was cast as Helen Macdonald in the film. She had never had a bird of prey land on her arm before. She soon got very used to it and had hawks, giant owls, small dragons and, eventually, a goshawk perched on her outstretched limb.
The film sounds amazing. And well worth seeing.
Apart from a lovely, long chat with Mirinda as she walked from the tunnelbana to the flat, that was it for my day. I may have gloated about my letterbox achievement.
Stalking report
