What the hell just happened?

There were some excellent songs in Eurovision this year. Unfortunately, the winner wasn’t one of them. I didn’t like last year’s winner (The Code) but at least it was a catchy tune. In fact, it was performed during the show, and it became an earworm almost instantly.

Don’t get me wrong, my opinion is not sour grapes because Sweden didn’t win with Bara Bada Bastu. No, it’s because the winning song was, basically, like a whiny drill going into your ears. It was high-pitched to buggery. In fact, when the performer took the glass trophy while singing the reprise, I was surprised it didn’t shatter.

I wasn’t alone in my opinion. Freya was completely unimpressed.

Sadly, that was not the case for the rest of the voting public. Actually, the jury vote saw Austria on top with an unexpected 258 votes. Okay, the jury votes can sometimes be without rhyme or reason, but then, at the last gasp, with Israel in the lead, the viewing (and clearly not listening) audience, finished the competition off with an inexplicable 178 points. Ok, not very high but, more than enough to win it. Weird.

Anyway, while the result was ridiculous, the company certainly wasn’t. Sadly, Anna BoomBoom and Peter couldn’t come because Anna was in her nightdress and I don’t think Peter really wanted to. Also, while Nicoline came for sausages, bread and chat from 7:30, as soon as the singing started, she was out of the house and in her car as if transported to Oz in a tornado.

So, KSP, Jonas, Mirinda and I sat and listened, enjoyed and moaned, mocked a bit and generally had a lot of fun, until around 2am. Then, with at least two of us slurring a few words, they went home, and we went to bed.

Just in passing, I thought KSP’s sequined outfit worked quite well in our new yellow kitchen.

Always one for the conservative, is KSP.

PS: The title comes from the UK entry, which I thought was an excellent song but which received zero public votes. That was just wrong. When will Europe stop the Brexit backlash?
