Holey toes, Batman!

I am sick up and fed with throwing socks away because of the prevalence of holes appearing in the big toe region with horrendous regularity. It was an awful waste. Okay, as Mirinda said, socks are cheap but, as I said, if there was a sock shop next door, that would be fine but there isn’t. I needed to learn how to darn. So, the other day, I watched a few YouTube videos on how to fix the holes in socks.

While a few were incredibly complex and designed for woolen socks, I managed to find a very easy on which just called for a bit of simple sewing.

And today, given the warmth and the bright sunshine on the deck, I decided I’d give it a shot. But that was at the end of the day; the morning was not exactly bathed in light.

At about 06:45, I started to make Mirinda’s morning cup of tea. I put the kettle on and then went to the loo while waiting for it to boil. When I returned to the kitchen, I reached for the tea leaves. It was a bit too dark in the beverage corner of the kitchen, so I reached out and switched the light on. Only the switch didn’t work. Like a typical male, I tried it a few times. But to no avail.

I tried a few different electrical items, but there was no power. I checked the fuses. They were all fine. The breaker switch, too, was in the go position.

I woke Mirinda with the sad news that there was no tea this morning. I added that I was going to check the stuga.

When I walked in, I tried the light switch and it worked. Further in, in the kitchen, the clocks on both the cooker and the microwave were on. The heater was quietly blowing warm air into the room. Everything, in fact, was perfectly normal. Reaching for the teabags, I made Mirinda a cup of tea.

My first thought was that the power had come back on while I walked to across from the house. My second thought was that there was a problem between the mains cabinet and the house which didn’t affect the stuga. After all, a while ago, we had Lukas come over and reroute the power from the house to the stuga to the mains directly to the stuga.

When I returned to the house, with the cup of tea, the TV was on and the light in the kitchen was on. I guess my first thought was correct. It was a very short power outage.

Which is a bit ironic when cast against the huge power failure in most of Spain and Portugal and bits of France this afternoon. It caused a lot more inconvenience than the lack of a morning cup of tea.

And speaking of a lack, I finished darning a few socks while Mirinda read an article for her uni work. The biggest problem was threading the needle but, eventually, I managed it. I need one of those wire things that make it so much easier.

Okay, I admit I’m not going to win any sewing competitions, but at least I’ve given some socks a second life and my big toes some comfort.
