I hate waking up to a mess in the mornings. Generally, before bed, I tidy the kitchen. Washing up, wiping down, sweeping, the usual things one does after cooking and eating a meal. It takes me about 15 minutes – just right for listening to The Archers. And it means the kitchen is not a depressing sight first thing.
I do, sometimes use the dishwasher but, because the machine in the kitchen is small and not very well designed, combined with the fact that a lot of things I use can’t go in it anyway, I tend to hand wash and use the dishwasher as a draining board.
Then, some nights, I just don’t feel like doing any of it before bed and I wake up to this…

It was even more depressing given that the dining table was also full of detritus.
It took three dishwasher loads and a couple of sinks full but, eventually, the kitchen was useable once more. I then messed it up with making lunch. As I said to Mirinda, my life consists of making the kitchen a mess then tidying it up again. I have no idea how I managed when I had to work as well.
The rest of my day was spent in my study, helping Mirinda and working on our accounts. There was some time spent out on the deck, given the day was gloriously sunny and warm. In fact, the girls spent a lot of time outside; Emma in the sun and Freya under the table because she claimed it was too hot.
Emma doesn’t get too hot. She spends most of her outside time chasing a ball and bringing it back, running around the garden, searching for it in the interim. In doing so, she winds up bringing back not just the tennis ball but also half the trees in the garden, clinging entwined in her hair.
They both need a good clipping now that the winter seems to be behind us. As soon as Freya’s latest season is finished, we’ll book them in for a jolly good shearing.
In the meanwhilst, we’ll put up with the shaggy pair. Of course, we always have to put up with Emma and her tennis ball addiction.

It’s a good job Freya has no interest in chasing the ball as well. There would be a lot of arguments.
