Potholes and salmon

There are a number of things we’ll miss about the UK when we return to Sweden next weekend. One of those things is lightly smoked salmon. I get it from Waitrose and it tastes perfect when I add an avocado crust and set it atop spinach, samphire and peas. I haven’t seen it anywhere else. In the world.

Something we won’t miss are the potholes. It’s a bit of a national sport here, avoiding them. Some people are very good at it, while others seem to think that the faster they go, the less impact the craters will have on their cars.

For example, there was a massive pothole in one of the streets I walk along on my way into town. It is huge. I would eagerly anticipate how many drivers would hit and how many would miss it.

Actually, someone tried to fix it a while back, but the job was done so badly that the top came off and the gravel filler spread all over the road. A bit like a ripped off scab with decidedly rocky pus.

It’s been the same since I started walking to Waitrose…so from early January at least.

Then, this morning, I noticed it had been repaired. Again. Sadly, I didn’t take a before photo and the after photo would just be a bit of road so, it seems, would be a bit pointless. I took this photo of a magnolia instead, not far from the house.

My introduction, writing about lightly smoked salmon may also seem a bit pointless but, actually, I made it for dinner tonight as Mirinda returned from her two days in London. It was delicious and well received.
