Last week, I spotted a poster for a Christmas concert being held in Skärborgarnas Hus. The show was called Karin Westerberg with guests. Or Karin Westerberg med gäster in Swedish. It was to be held at Skärborgarnas Hus, the big hall up the road where I’ve seen a few classic concerts and where we saw the biographical film about Mary Cassett back in November. It promised to be star-spangled and festive.
And it was. It was also very well attended.
Karin is seated at the piano in the sequins. The photo is a bit blurry because we were seated upstairs, the main seating section being very near full.
From our vantage point, I thought Karin looked remarkably like Jeri Ryan though, when I looked her up back at home, she doesn’t really. While she didn’t look like a ridiculously sexy Borg, she was an amazing entertainer. Her singing and playing were fantastic. And her personality, a real treat. It didn’t really matter that we didn’t understand anything she said.
Karin comes from Gnesta (just up the road from us) and she mentioned it a few times between songs. Mirinda thought she was saying how the audience at Gnesta was a lot more forthcoming when singing along than the Trosa people. Actually, Mirinda understood some of the between song chat and even a bit of the story/poem Karin recited at one point. I understood the word ‘tomte’.
Karin is a very accomplished performer, having been part of SVT’s Så Ska Det Låta which is a musical game show. She is also a member of a jazz trio. And, she was crowned Sweden’s Lucia in 2004.
Her guests, this year (she also performed a Christmas concert last year with another set of guests) were Marika Lindé, Johan Boding and Jonas Gideon who does a fine line in Elton John outfits and songs.
All up, the concert was great fun with an excellent selection of songs. From Christmas standards to ABBA in Swedish to Queen, all with energy and joy. All up, a superb night out in Trosa.
