Heaving with treats

Bergs Gård is a farm, not very far from us. It’s off the back road to Nyköping, to be exact. We popped in earlier this year only to be sent packing because of a private function. The next interaction with the farm was the catering at Nicoline’s Not a Garden Party. Then, a little while ago, I spotted a poster advertising their Julbord. I booked three seats and, tonight, we went.

That all sounds very easy, but the going wasn’t. Over the last few days, the snow has been melting as the temperature rises, and the resulting liquid has started to solidify into very thick and slippery ice. This was brought home to me as I took the girls for a walk around the woods.

The path in the photo above is largely made up of ice. Even the girls were finding it difficult to walk without slipping. I, of course, had my spikes on, which made it a lot easier, but, even so, it wasn’t easy going. Add to the fact my balance issues and shoe wound and it meant a not very enjoyable walk.

Speaking of injuries, Denise spent most of the day resting up her sore knee which our trip to Stockholm didn’t do any favours. As Mirinda was at her final Swedish class today, a lazy day around the house was not only good but essential.

Then, of course, we headed up to the farm.

Through the excessively dark night we drove, peering out the windows, trying to find the non-lit sign to the farm. Then we spotted the weak light cast by the eight little Christmas light bulbs randomly thrown around a small fir tree. We drove up to the car park.

While it appeared that no-one was home for quite a while, eventually we parked as more lights showed the way to the small building outside the farm where a happy smiling person gave out cups of glögg. While I always find it a bit too sweet, the warmth and friendliness of the delivery was very nice. Mind you, the ice that lay about was not that friendly. Still, the spikes made a huge difference to all three of us.

Once inside, we found our table and then indulged in all sorts of delights. Herring, eggs, meat, salmon, Jansson’s Temptation, and lots of other stuff. The table was almost heaving with treats.

And the place was almost heaving with other diners as well. Clearly, the Julbord at Bergs Gård is a very popular Christmas treat.

Oh, and I had some vodka made with wheat rather than potato. It was very smooth. It’s produced by Lantmännens at their distillery in Lidköping by the shores of Lake Vänern. One to savour.
