Another Sunday, another lunch at the café on Notholmen though we went a bit later this week. This was because there were so many people there last week that we thought we’d avoid the crowds. While we did avoid them, there wasn’t any soup left. Which is annoying because their soups are perfect for a cold wintry day. To be fair, we’d intended to go earlier but the morning just slipped away
Not that we did very much. Mirinda took the girls for a walk and I spent hours trying work out how to get to Amsterdam in April. This was harder than it needed to be.
The problem was with trains that needed reservations. There were none for the day in April that I needed. There was also a problem with believing the advice given by The Man in Seat 61 who, normally, is reliable. His claim that you can book up to six months ahead is bollocks for a start. It’s more like three.
Anyway, there came a point where I just couldn’t make it work and decided to throw in the towel. I even wrote to John and explained that I wouldn’t be joining the Weasels at the Vermeer exhibition. Then Mirinda returned from her walk.
She convinced me not to give up, so I started again, with a different route. And I was successful. Okay, it means two trains, a hotel, a ferry, a bus, and another four trains, but at least I’ll get there. As Mirinda said, it’s as much fun planning it as actually making the trip. Now, fingers crossed, it’ll all work. And, of course, I need to plan the trip back. That can wait till tomorrow.
And so, after our tiring morning, we headed for the island, where it was very cold.
While we had the only food options that remained, they were delicious. Next week we’ll try and go earlier. Maybe.
You do give up too quickly sometimes! And of course real travel is more complex than the processed travel of flying ..
