Whenever we visit the Blue Mountains, we always do a drive by of our old house. The last time, in 2017, the garden was overgrown, in 2013, the gnomes had gone while today there was a shipping container in the front garden and a fridge on the verandah. There was also a lot of rubbish outside, in front of the parked car, which led us to believe that the house was being renovated.
The front door was open but we didn’t see anyone. It was also very quiet.
I hope it’s being renovated and the shipping container is temporary.
After checking out the house, we headed down to the Minniehaha Falls Reserve where we used to walk the dogs.
The park was delightfully deserted. We walked as far as the ford. Where Brad had his meeting with the red bellied black snake. We then headed into Katoomba for a lovely walk up and down Lurline Street. Well, Fi and I did. Mirinda was busy in the bank sorting out her account and explaining to a teller that it was possible to hold an Australian passport but not live in Australia.
In the meanwhilst, I found the best shop in Katoomba – Fish and Fowl. It sells fresh fish, poultry, cured meats, brilliant cheese, all the things I dearly love. I shocked Fi by buying three salmon fillets from New Zealand. It was the price that was shocking, not the fish. The fish was superb.
I made my salmon with avocado crust tonight and the fish proved to be seriously creamy. Just like the man behind the counter said it would be.
While I was very lucky with the fish, things weren’t so good when I tried to buy a new suitcase in Big W. The thing is, my old suitcase stopped worked very well a number of years ago and, this trip, the wheels have been somewhat indecisive when it comes to doing what they were designed for. Mirinda convinced me to chuck it in the skip and then buy a new one in the mountains.
Big W had one. Literally. There was just one. But the wheels were a bit dodgy. I tried it out then put it back. That wasn’t going to happen. Fi was concerned because it was pink. Just shows my sister-in-law doesn’t know me quite as well as I thought.
So, suitcaseless, we returned to the car and drove back to the house. We’d already been out for hours, having had brunch at The Misty Blue Cafe in Wentworth Falls at 11:30, and could almost hear Archie calling from the highway. And my toe was seriously wanting to get out of my shoe.
Some old guy indicating the trig point in Wenty, as the locals call the town.
