You know that feeling you get when you wake up in the morning and the sheets look like someone butchered a chicken in your bed? Well, that happened to me this morning. After swinging my feet out of the bed and getting a shock at the state of my right (the gouty one) foot, I stripped back the sheets to find a lot of dried blood caking them.
Obviously, I leapt into action. I made my first cup of coffee and got back into bed to wake up properly, just in case the foot and blood were all part of an unremembered dream. After listening to a bit of the World Service continuing coverage of all things royal funeral and then the latest episode of The Archers, I decided to check my foot again.
Nothing had changed.
I realised it was real, though I couldn’t for the life of me work out when it had happened. Checking my socks from yesterday revealed a dried blood patch in one, so I reasoned, it must have happened sometime between putting them on first thing in the morning and taking them off last thing at night.
I then had to wash the wound and the sheets, both of which I did after finishing my coffee. The wound looked significant once I’d washed the dried blood away. I put a band aid on it and hoped my foot would remain attached to my ankle.
The plan this morning was to go and have brunch in Wentworth Falls but we didn’t leave the house until gone midday and, subsequently, there was no room at any of the inns. Having walked up and down the main road, we climbed back into the car and headed for Leura again. The plan was to return to Sorenson’s but, sadly, Sorenson’s was closed. We decided to try Leura Garage.
And what an excellent idea that was.
The Leura Garage was once, as you’d imagine, a garage. There are still bits and pieces of the original place in use, including old tools in the floor and a big hydraulic lift being used to store wine.
But, as well as being an incredibly cool place, they are also environmentally aware. Given the amount of non-environmentally friendly things in Oz this visit, it’s really refreshing to find somewhere that cares. And the food and service were excellent.
I was going to have the calamari until Mirinda drew my attention to the Garage sausage wheel. How could I possibly resist? There are a number of food delights I like to try as we travel to places afresh and sausages are definitely one of them.
The Garage sausage was gluten free which, of course, means there are no breadcrumbs. I remember Bob telling us an Australian sausage was defined as having 70% pork in it, the remaining percentage being made up of the extra stuff including breadcrumbs (or sawdust in the cheaper ones). The Garage sausage tasted of 100% pig.
It was delicious, particularly with the homemade sauerkraut.
The Leura Garage gets a big thumbs up from me. The food, the service, the beer…all fantastic. Anyone visiting Leura and not going to the Garage is really going to miss out.
After the sausage fest, we headed for the supermarket for dinner supplies then back to the house to pick up Archie.
By this time, my foot was yelling at me to take my shoe off. The relief was instant and I vowed to not replace the shoe until tomorrow at the earliest.
Mirinda and Fi took Archie for a walk around Wentworth Falls lake while I reclined on the lounge reading and drinking rum.
Late in the day, we had a call from the real estate agent who was delighted with the house and enthusiastic about the photographs. Let’s hope it sells really quickly.
There was no news regarding the beacon and the skip man.
