Waspish behaviour

The gardeners came today and found a whole swarm of wasps living under the roof tiles sitting above the bay window. It happened when Tommy J was cutting back the wisteria. He conferred with Dave the Gardener and it was decided they needed to tell me. I immediately went onto Check-a-Trade and organised to have a pest removal guy come around tomorrow.

Another bit of excitement was provided by a sparrow.

While I was Skyping with Mirinda, I thought I saw a bird fly into the extension. However, looking around the room, I couldn’t see anything remotely avian. Mind you, I didn’t have my glasses on, so there was no guarantee that I’d seen anything, let alone a small bird.

Then, a little while later, I discovered a sparrow trying to get out of the extension. It was just after I’d shut everything up, once the gardeners had arrived.

The poor thing was flapping up and down against the window, occasionally sitting on the seat of the exercise bike, frantically looking for the exit.

I opened the first big door and then went behind the sparrow in an effort to convince it to head in that direction. She was a bit hesitant. I put my hand out to encourage her to hop on board but she didn’t take up the offer. She just chirped and hopped around.

I patiently urged her towards the open door until I managed to get her to, finally, fly off, into the trees and safety.

These were not the only animal related incidents today.

Returning from our early morning walk, during which I had to rescue Emma from the advances of a typically randy Rodney, I spotted a fox in the middle of our street. I had the dogs waiting for me at the top of the steps and, fortunately, they didn’t see her.

The fox, however, spotted the girls straight away. As we started to descend the steps, she shot off into the nearest garden and out of sight.

I only had a quick glimpse but it looked like the fox that regularly visits us; the one I’ve seen on the terrace a few times. I actually have no idea if it’s male or female but my default is female so, she’s a she. I know that’ll irritate some people but, I don’t care.

Later in the day, I had another meeting between Emma and Rodney to referee. It was Neighbour Dave, back from a visit to IKEA, which explained both his early and late walks. Incidentally, he didn’t like IKEA because he said they tried to sell him small objects he didn’t need, want or, sometimes, understand.

Anyway, in my success in keeping Emma and Rodney apart, I came off worst with scratches to my right leg. Note there is one from Emma (below) and one from Rodney (above)

And that was about it for my day.

In a wider world, there were two notable deaths today. James Caan and Shinzo Abe. One a Hollywood actor, the other the longest serving Prime Minister of Japan. One, I assume, of natural causes and the other by being assassinated, a very unusual thing in Japan and, obviously, unnatural.
