Hope Dinner 2011

Whenever I pick up one of Mirinda’s Ruth Rendell paperbacks (and there’s many of them) and it’s an Inspector Wexford mystery, I always picture George Baker as the eponymous policeman. I think he was perfect for the role. Sadly, he died, aged 80 yesterday from complications following a stroke. Something I didn’t realise is that the actress who played his wife Dora was his wife in real life as well. I always said they played a very believable couple. She actually died earlier this year. Sadly missed, both of them.

Tonight was our traditional Hope Dinner. We were originally going to a Michelin starred restaurant but, given the fact that I’m unable to use an entire set of cutlery at present, we thought it would be a bit of a waste. Instead we went to Caffe Uno in Castle Street.

Mirinda at Caffe Uno

We chose Caffe Uno for two reasons. Because Prezzo was full and because they served food that could be eaten single handed. It was an excellent choice because service and food were excellent. It was also interesting seeing the changes that have been wrought since it ceased being Brasserie Gerard.

Last year, at our first Hope Dinner, we hoped for Claire’s success at the hospital and Mirinda’s mental need for a new job. Both have been achieved so this year, along with our Hopes, we also celebrated our gratitude for the past 12 months.

This years Hopes are for Claire’s continuing improvement, dad’s health and that I’ll not need an operation on my wrist.

I don’t believe in anything so Hope is all I have.” Me, today.

NB: Caffe Uno is no longer in Castle Street. It was replaced with Chimichanga then (and currently) Bill’s – 07Oct2016
