Making räkmacka

The world here is still full of snow. While no more has fallen, the temperature has remained well below zero and there’s been no rain. The crunch of boots and the silencing of tyres are still all around us. And, of course, it still all looks beautiful.

Even our house. This is how it looked as I returned from the shops today.

The shops weren’t fun today. Normally I quite like going shopping but today things were conspiring against me. First up was the butcher.

I left the house at the usual time and walked all the way down to the butcher only to discover that it didn’t open until 11am. I looked at my phone. It was 10:30. I turned my trolley around and retraced my steps back up the hill.

I shopped in Hemköp today, for a change, and to rifle through the herbs and spices, looking for seeds. I’m searching for all the seeds I had at home so I can cook some Persian meals. I’ve found some but not all so, every now and then, I branch out to a different supermarket. They didn’t have anything I wanted.

For various reasons, I prefer Ica, so shopping at Hemköp wasn’t a lot of fun. Even the bag of sugar I bought had a hole in it.

Then, as I boarded the bus back home, my 70 minute bus ticket ran out. Normally, I make it to the shops and back well within the 70 minutes but not today. Obviously it was the butcher’s fault.

I still managed to get back before Mirinda went for her Friday fika at Norrby’s. Which means the girls weren’t left on their own. It wasn’t long before she did leave though, aiming to get some more of the goats cheese pie.

Meanwhile, I decided to try making räkmacka.

I have discovered that I really love räkmacka, having never had it before arriving in Sweden. It’s one of those meals that is easy to work out without a recipe, so I bought the bits and put it together for lunch today.

I have to say, I was quite impressed with the result.

I realise there’s too much avocado, but I couldn’t leave half. And I do love avocado. I suppose I should have taken the photo with just the first half.

Stupid Gaz.

Oh, and Mirinda didn’t get any goats cheese pie as there wasn’t any this week. She had halloumi instead, which, she said, was still delicious.

It was clearly a day of disappointments which were all dismissed by our evening constitutional around the snowy neighbourhood.

So we’ve been here 4 months and you’ve still never got to the butcher! It’s becoming a brigadoon butcher…
