I can happily announce that we’ve finally found a restaurant near us which isn’t Italian. It is Spis & Vin (food and wine) and is just across the road from Tyresö Centrum. And the food is marvellous.
The waiter (there’s only him and the chef) was a very jolly fellow who looked Italian (or Spanish). Mirinda asked him, but he claimed he was Swedish. He patted his tummy and I told him he could have just stepped out of a Naples trattoria. Which was ironic given we’d finally found a non-Italian restaurant.
Sadly, he told us that they had started the day with 30 bookings. By the time we arrived that had been reduced to six. He said it was because various members of various parties had suddenly become sick and cancelled in case they had coronavirus.
Hopefully the restaurant had a few walk-ins to make up for it. They really deserve it.
Eating out was the highlight of the day for me. Mirinda, on the other hand, spent a lovely couple of hours walking in the woods with the girls. At the same time, I was wrestling with the bibliography software, trying to create a new style so Mirinda can complete a journal article.
I managed to sort it out but, when it came to using the new style on Mirinda’s Mac, it wouldn’t transfer. This was particularly frustrating. I managed to fix it later, after Mirinda went to bed.
But, back in the real world…
Of course, given Freya’s in-season current state, we haven’t used the services of The Perfect Swedish Family this week, which, in turn, means we didn’t go into Stockholm. So, Mirinda having returned from the woods with muddy pawed puppies, we, eventually, headed out to dinner.
Of course, the menu was all in Swedish. I’d cheated by reading a Google translated version online before going, so we knew what we were having.
Mirinda started with a tiny seafood taco (complete with tiny taco holder) while I had an amazing duck breast with hazelnut butter. For main course, Mirinda had the venison while my veal just melted in my mouth.
Dessert was an easy choice. Top of the menu was crème brûlée. I had to try it. My review is on my CB review page. Suffice it to say, it was delicious.
All in all, it’s top marks for Spis & Vin. We’ll be returning.
Beer Review
During my meal I had one of the various IPAs on offer in Sweden. (They call them ‘eepa’ rather than the initials IPA.) IPA seems to be the new beer standard. And, the small breweries here are producing some amazing beers.
Tonight I indulged in a couple of bottles of A Ship Full of IPA. At 5.8%, it’s a bit more than a session beer but, a couple over dinner, is just fine.
It is created using four different varieties of hops: magnum, amarillo, cascade and galaxy. This makes it quite malty but not so much as to make it unrefreshing. It is crisp, cool and very, very tasty.
I don’t know about ‘Brutal Brewing’ but whatever they are doing, it works. Brilliantly. Highly recommended.
