Today marked my first foray into the outside world. Well, the world beyond our garden path where my limited outside world has been for the last few days. Today’s world made gloomy by cloud cover, bare trees and miserable faces.
I say miserable faces because, apart from two people, everyone looked like the weather. It’s odd because the Brits usually smile through the awful conditions. Maybe their misery comes from the state of the country as a whole and not just the climate.
It was decided that the state of my pantry demanded a trip to Waitrose or face the prospect of eating tins of crushed tomatoes, tissues and laundry detergent (the two main stocks in my kitchen supply cupboard). Getting my right sock on was an interesting challenge and the shoe wasn’t any easier but, eventually, wicker trolley in hand, I headed out.
I was going to forgo a visit to Starbucks (or Nero’s). This was firstly because I shouldn’t have the sugar and secondly because once I stopped walking and sat down I wasn’t convinced I’d want to walk back. It was to be a shopping trip alone.
Normally, when my feet are acting in their normal abnormal flappy fashion, it takes me about an hour and a half. This is without a coffee stop and only includes walking in, shopping and walking home again. Today, given the lingering pain in my right ankle, it took me an extra hour.
It was a long, shuffling trip both ways, something I was very glad was over by the time I reached home and could put my foot up. (Actually it would have been nice to take it off and put it up but that would have proved impossible for re-attachment.)
Still, I managed and bought enough to last two days so I won’t have to return until Wednesday.
Enough of my woes. Poor Mirinda was slightly better and decided to go to the doctor. The doctor ticked the usual boxes but basically assured her she wasn’t going to die of pneumonia. About five minutes after she returned Bob arrived and we settled down into our current routine of not doing very much.
As Bob said at one point, we were a sad and sorry bunch.
I made salmon with the dill and walnut crust for dinner which Bob and Mirinda agreed was delicious. (Actually, I accidentally marinated the salmon in some fresh lemon juice for about 15 minutes beforehand which I think improved the flavour. I’ll try and remember that for next time.)
All round a nothing much day but at least my walking ability is slowly returning.
