Gravlax is great

When did it become impossible to sleep in on Sundays? I seem to remember a time when I’d sleep well beyond 10am let alone any earlier. I’m sure it wasn’t that long ago. These days, though, regardless of when I go to sleep or in what condition, I can’t seem to get passed 6am.

I guess it could be because that’s generally the time I wake up for going to work or the gym or anything really. The problem is, whatever the reason, it means I wake up feeling like I could do with a few more hours sleep but remain completely denied.

People might say that I should just go back to bed but it’s not that simple. While feeling washed out I am insanely wide awake and ill prepared for a return to the Land of Nod.

Something else I’m ill prepared for is the Sunday radio programme that is Something Understood. This is truly a surreal way to start Sunday.

The Radio 4 website says it is an “Ethical and religious discussion that examines some of the larger questions of life.” That is as maybe but to my sleep addled brain it’s a huge bunch of poetry and quotations that feel like they might be making a point but lack any form of clarity. Or form.

Whoever is presenting the episode seems earnest and serious and devout but, when you listen to the words, they just seem to be drivel. Random sounds disconnected with communication except on some non-existent metaphysical plane. But delivered with serious intent and thoughtfulness.

Anyway, that’s what I generally have to put up with of a Sunday morning.

The rest of the day was spent being a bit lazy except for the market which I visited long enough to buy some essential smoked salmon, gravlax and mango gin. And, naturally, I snapped a progress photo of the Swain and Jones development.

How long is this going to take?

Back at home and after lunch, we popped up to the garden centre (I told Mirinda she’d have to take Fiona when she’s over) for some much needed plants.

A few weeks ago we bought a couple of window boxes to go under the bay window of the library. Unfortunately they were too small. Fortunately, however, they were perfect for my office. Even the colour. So I attached them today.

I should add that I had to rope in Mirinda a couple of times to hold the box in place while I marked the holes for the brackets but, essentially, I did it.

And, while Mirinda took the girls up to Crondall for a delightful farm walk, I made a lasagne for the Stockwells to enjoy while I’m away. This then joined the shepherd’s pie and the bacon wrapped chicken breasts in the freezer. Not having the world’s biggest freezer means that’s about it for pre-prepared meals for the Stockwells. So you could say that the freezer is now Well Stocked for the Stockwells.

And, before I forget, here’s my new glasses which I did forget to post yesterday when I picked them up from Suki Baines, Bond optician extraordinaire.
