Parched

We haven’t had a sustained period of rain for ages. According to Neighbour Dave, there was 90 minutes of almost heavy rain while we were away but that was it. Oddly, we haven’t been issued with a hose pipe ban yet though there is one somewhere up north. I’ve heard nothing about water levels in crucial reservoirs like we normally do. I can only assume this is because we had so much rain earlier in the year when it never looked like it was going to stop.

The constant heat and dry means I have to water the garden every day. While it suffered during our two weeks away, it managed to just hang on. A lot of plants perked up almost instantly when we first watered them. The park isn’t so lucky.

The usual beautiful, lush, green grass has all but vanished, replaced by straw. The wildflower meadows are non-existent as seeds wait for some water to activate them.

The heat means I have to take a bottle of water for the dogs (particularly Emma) which they slurp eagerly from whenever they get overheated. Emma, reasonably, waits for it to pour into the bowl but Freya, for reasons known only to her, likes to lick it as it leaves the actual bottle.

Not that Freya needs a lot of heat relief given she doesn’t actually run that much. Her main source of exhaustion is watching Emma tearing around after her tennis ball. Being sensible, her running is in proportion to the temperature – the hotter it is the less she runs. Emma knows no such boundary.

A dry Avenue of Trees

Apart from the gym, walking in the park and sorting out a wine order, today was spent doing housework – the heat has meant a lot more dust than usual…and we normally get a lot of dust anyway. It’s like there’s dust on the dust.

And flies! The heat has brought with it almost Australian levels of flies. It’s extraordinary.
