First up, having been to the gym then walked the girls in the park, I set off for the Talking Newspaper, stopping off at Starbucks on the way (of course).
There’s a new barista at Starbucks. Her name is Eily. I said it was an unusual name, asking if it was short for anything like Eileen. She smiled wryly and shook her head. It seems her Scottish father has a favourite distillery – Islay – and so named her after his favourite whisky. I said it was a good job he didn’t like Johnny Walker.
She agreed then said at least it couldn’t be shortened. I disagreed saying she could be called ‘i.’
After that bit of jollity and suitably armed with a life affirming latte, I walked to the studio.
My readers this week were husband and wife team Mike and Rosemary and Nina. Because we’d finished editing early and were waiting for the engineer, we were just chatting about ‘stuff’, when the subject swung onto names. It turned out that Mike was actually David but all the men in his family were known by their middle or second names. He said it could be quite confusing when being called at the doctor because he sits and looks around rather before realising it’s his turn.
I then asked Nina where her name came from. After all, I said, she didn’t appear Russian or Spanish (‘nina’ means ‘little girl’ in Spanish) and sounded about as English as one could get. She then explained that her parents hadn’t worked out what to call her. They didn’t want an old name or a fashionable name and so were in a quandary.
In the last stages of pregnancy, her mother and father went to the theatre to see a Noel Coward play. They really enjoyed the play (how could you NOT enjoy a Noel Coward?) and came away all laughter and light. One of the characters in the play was called Nina. They both agreed it was the perfect name. Nina told us that she was (and is) the only Nina she knows.
The session went very well and had some great moments of hilarity. Mike has an incredibly dry wit and Nina is almost as irreverent as me. Fortunately Rosemary gave the recording an air of respectability.
It was a busy but very enjoyable day.
Sounds like a lot of fun, I wont know any of the girls at Starbucks when I get there they are coming and going. I love that you are sending me selfies as I get to see you more. Well started my special diet for my colonoscopy today the stuff i cant eat really out weighs the stuff I can, they don’t give you any recipe’s you just have to sort it out your self still if i lose a bit of weight I wont be complaining.
