Christmas in Castle Street

Today was mum’s first experience of a Christmas market albeit the one in Farnham which doesn’t run through the night. Sad, but true. I think the car driving population of Farnham would have a fit if Castle Street was closed passed 5pm.

Actually, while on the subject, it was a shame that the Borough wasn’t closed as well. With narrow footpaths, three dogs and a hardly mobile mother, it made it difficult given the cars only travel scant inches away with less regard than a flea for a dog.

Still, mustn’t grumble…I suppose.

Jackie and Terry brought mum back early enough to enjoy a cup of tea before heading back. Which left mum watching Mirinda and I eating another attempt at the Chez Gaz petit dejuener. It was a lot better this week but it still needs improvement. But, back to the market…

Castle Steet was fairly packed with lots of happy, smiley folk all inspecting the various Christmas themed stalls. A few times we were in danger of losing mum as she kept wandering off. But we didn’t lose her thanks mostly to her bright red coat.

We met Sue wandering round with Pip, Bertie and Issy. Of course Emma went mad on seeing Sue.

We also ran into Dave, Gail and Rodney just outside the Bush where more stalls were erected including one for gourmet marshmallow. Mirinda couldn’t resist buying some passionfruit because the young boy manning the counter was all doe eyed.

Poor Freya was a bit scared of all the legs so I picked her up for a lot of the more crowded parts.

Eventually we wound up at the William Cobbett. We’d wanted to go to the Riverside Cafe at the Maltings, but, very oddly, it was closed. Not that that mattered. A pint, a cider and a tea were perfect…and they welcomed the dogs.

And then we made mum walk the ten miles home.

I made my usual Christmas Eve dinner since we won’t be home on the actual day. The general consensus was that it was delicious though possibly not as delicious as the jalousie I made for dessert.

Anyway, a tiring but lovely day.
