By George! Another strike?

Yes, the Underground has ground to a halt once more as the unions call another 24 hour strike. Everyone is moaning (presumably not the people who voted for it) but, like most humans, just getting on with the pain of reaching work somehow.

Boris, mayor of London, has called for a change to the rules around the mechanisms of the strike ballot. He wants the vote to be void unless more than 50% of the union members actually vote. I think that’s fair enough, otherwise the desires of the many are being subsumed beneath the choices of the vocal few. However, if this is the case for unions, shouldn’t it also be the case for the country? If less than 50% of the electorate vote in an election, should it be declared a null and void election?

However, consider this: If people who do not wish to vote are forced to, will their vote be a considered choice or a random cross in any old box? If I turn that back in on itself, if the entire union membership DID vote, would they all mean it? Or just decide to have a day off.

Anyway, needless to say, given that I’m not actually paid to work, I stayed home today. And Mirinda is working from home. Which is nice except when I’m locked out of the bedroom because she’s on a phone conference!

Yesterday, a day which was blighted by grey clouds and rain of varying densities, was a rather sedate affair. Mirinda worked on her essay(s) which I then read and scribbled over (interestingly, Mirinda says ‘nonetheless’ and I say ‘nevertheless’, something I never knew) while I fiddled about with the PC. I’m trying to catch up with things left incomplete during the dissertation period. Obviously there’s things around the house which I’m also working on but the PC seriously needs a bit of a clean up. I’m also rather keen on teaching myself how to use MS Expressions as I can’t afford the newest version of Dreamweaver. Ok, I’ll shut up about software now.

We had a lovely late lunch up at Next Door at the George, where we’ve not been for a while but used to go virtually every weekend. They have had a cultural shift – rather than all of their staff being from Australia and New Zealand, they are now Schumanian. I always think it’s a bit odd finding Schumanians in Farnham but Odiham? That’s very much out of the way and seriously Middle England.

The food was as good as always and we had the usual wander around the town before heading home the long way round.

I have asked mum to write a post about the family reunion, thinly disguised as a wedding, and have my fingers crossed she will!

  1. Mum Cook says:

Gary, all written – up to you now. You seem to have more railway strikes then we do. Mind you, seeing as I don’t travel on the train, I suppose I would not really know.
    love mum
