The big pond

Boy, did we go for a long walk today! Day-z is exhausted and my feet are feeling it a bit.

We set off after lunch. After the cricket ground we headed up between the fields and into a delightful little path that runs down the side of a hill (sort of like a hanger). We found it with Mirinda a few weeks ago.

I’d intended to walk as far as Frensham church in order to find Ralph Wood’s grave stone. That’s Ralph from yesterday’s post. Apparently he was buried in the churchyard. I couldn’t find his gravestone so I took some photos of other, interesting grave markers instead. This one is above William Clear’s last resting place.

The day was too nice to just return so, from the church, we continued over the road, found the public footpath heading to the pond and just kept going. There was a lot of hills but, basically, the walk was pretty easy. Both of the Frensham Ponds are surrounded by sand and heather so the paths are easy to find and walk though, occasionally quite steep.

We reached the National Trust shop after about an hour and a half and sat on a shady bench. I’d made sure to bring a bottle of water for Day-z and she gratefully lapped up half of it. We sat in the shade for a bit, watching the carelessly sunburnt people going to the shop for refreshments. I was particularly dismayed at the sight of two little girls, both very pale skinned, running around without hats on. How can parents be so stupid?

The sun was out all day and belting down which explains why so many groups were taking in the beach-like atmosphere of the great pond.

We had a look to see if there were any boats on the pond but, sadly, there were none. We decided to return and headed back up the hill, down the hill, up the hill and, finally, down the hill. And there was the Holly Bush, beckoning us. I bought a Peroni and settled down on the verandah. Day-z collapsed in the chair beside me.

A lovely walk on a hot day, tempered perfectly by a good, stiff breeze all day.
