I feel certain that I have given my opinion on Halloween, here on the blog, many times before, so I won’t reiterate how much I feel that it should stay in America in its present form. I always dread the knock of little hands on the front door come October 31. For that reason, I tend to keep the lights off and hide in a cupboard until it’s well beyond the bedtime for most sugar starved kids.
I remember Dawn telling me that when her twins were born, she put a sign on her front door asking people not to disturb the babies within by knocking. She was still putting the sign on the door after they’d left home for uni.
In Farnham, it became the unwritten rule that if a house had a line of pumpkins leading to the front door, the occupants would happily give out sugar while ones without a vegetable trail were immune from witches and goblins. This wasn’t always the case but was probably introduced because a lot of people didn’t like being disturbed by overhyped children.
I’m still recovering from the giant banana that visited us in 2011.
Essentially, I’ve managed to avoid Halloween for the most part so it was a bit of a shock when I received a small visitor this afternoon. It was with great relief that I let Kalle and his grandmother into the house so he could visit the girls.
Kalle is Nicoline’s grandson and he loves the dogs. Okay, he’s not that keen on Emma’s annoyingly high-pitched barking but, then, no-one really is. Except perhaps Harald and Roger who both laugh when Emma barks and I shout “Shut up, Emma!“
Anyway, once Emma had calmed down after realising it wasn’t an unwelcome kid in a costume, all was good and Kalle spent a good half an hour playing with her. Throwing the ball and Mr Fox, kissing and cuddling her, laughing, the whole gamut.
He also takes after his grandmother in directness. He suddenly declared that he’d had enough and was ready to leave. Gotta love that in a kid.
In the meanwhilst, this still stood, advertising the weekend to come at the activity park.
Let’s hope any visitors remain on their side of the mountain.
…. So we are in for a problem! Kalle had not “ understood” this with trick or treat until last night when we had 2 groups of kids visiting – he just fell apart with joy. So today, he plans to do it with you, as we come and pick you up….. maybe I can alter it so that he GIVES the girls some candy instead…?
