Around the square are the Guild Buildings. The Grand Place gradually became the commercial hub of the emergent city and the city's guilds built their headquarters there. Of the original guildhouses only one or two remained after the French artillery bombardment of 1695. After the French left, the guildsmen rebuilt everything in the flamboyant Baroque style that fills the place these days.
