More of the same

Another action packed day of taking apart bookcases and traipsing up and down the stairs with laundry baskets full of books. It’s just a pity I won’t be able to actually use the office until October. That’s when the electrician is coming to wire it up to the house (along with numerous other electrical things that need fixing).

Two down, one to go

Apart from the endless traipsing, the day was all about housework and taking the poodles for a walk through the park. In the park, I realised I haven’t reported on the progress of the castle wall for a while. So, here it is.

I think they’ve managed another row

It doesn’t look like they’ve managed a lot more since the last time I photographed it. I guess it’s a job they do between jobs or when they have enough money. Interestingly, the company that runs the castle (for conferences, weddings, etc) has recently gone into administration.

The wall, however, has nothing to do with them. The ruined parts of the castle, including the keep and the walls, belong to English Heritage. A few years ago they made a submission for lottery funding to repair the walls, which were in danger of falling down. The funding came through in 2009 and the work has been progressing since. Previously they were repairing the wall further up from where they are now. Apparently, if the funding hadn’t come through, the castle walls would have been too dangerous and the whole place would have been shut down and, gradually, turned into a ruin. While I quite like the idea of a romantic ruin in our park, an accessible castle is obviously better.
