Ashes
By the end of the dig, Trudi's hole had a final layer of ash
in the bottom. Was it a corn dryer? A big kiln? A very big ashtray? The jury
is still out on this one. Suffice to say that it will be filled in again very,
very soon. Subsequently, I have learned from my uni lecturer (an emminent archaeologist
in his own right) that it's almost certainly and very probably a corn dryer.
